Tourism’s meetings and conventions segment is an important economic driver, providing about $100 million annually in direct visitor spending to Puerto Rico. To educate and raise awareness of the importance of this segment, Meet Puerto Rico, also known as the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau, has created the portal muevetuisla.com.
Visitors to muevetuisla.com will find a video summarizing in a simple and lively manner Meet Puerto Rico’s work and accomplishments on behalf of the meetings and conventions industry everyday as well as valuable information about the organization. Milton Segarra, President and CEO of the organization, urged people to visit and share the link.
"This is a niche within the tourism industry that we want to highlight locally so that more people become familiar with, and aware of, the role we play in the local economy,” Segarra said. "In addition, it is a source of pride for the people of Puerto Rico to know that we compete on an even playing field with some of the world’s top destinations,” he concluded.
He added that for every $17 spent on marketing the destination to attract groups and conventions, $561 is generated in direct spending within the local economy. That money benefits small and large businesses such as hotels, restaurants, cultural institutions and attractions; shopping and entertainment businesses and venues; translation, audio visual and design services; transportation entities, as well as local artisans and performers, among others.
President of the Board of Directors for Meet Puerto Rico, Peter Hopgood, said that Puerto Rico competes with hundreds of destinations, both in the US and around the world, seeking to expand awareness of its ability to host groups and conventions. "This is a good competitive niche that takes a lot of effort, resources and commitment to excel and finally be selected. However, we have an excellent destination with all the necessary elements to grow this segment which in turn will continue to boost tourism and our economy,” concluded Hopgood.
